Works as Prevention, Not Cure

"The Rust Guard stick is a practical solution for preventing rust in the dishwasher, especially for areas with hard water. It fits easily into the cutlery basket and seems to help reduce rust spots on silverware after consistent use. However, it doesn't remove existing rust, so you'll need to clean items beforehand. Over time, the rod discolors, indicating it's working, but replacing it eventually is necessary. It’s a solid choice for prevention, though the price feels a bit high."

"This is such an ingenious idea! I leave it in my dishwasher top rack where I put my scissors (the only things that tend to rust in my dishwasher). Both pairs of scissors have some spots of rust stain on them prior to me using this product. Since using this product, there hasn't been new rust stains on my scissors and the exiting stains are slightly improved. The Rust-Be-Gone is now covered in lightly rust colored patina. So, i would say this product does work to keep rust off whatever you are washing in the dishwasher as long as you place it next to those items!"
